AVRIL Z. SPEAKS, Writer & Director
Avril Speaks has over fourteen years of experience as a filmmaker to include credits as a producer, writer, director, and editor. She made her directorial debut in 1999 when she directed the feature film The Round Table for Alpha Productions, and she recently completed her second feature film, Sophisticated Romance, which is traveling the film festival circuit.
She earned her M.F.A. in Film Directing from COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF THE ARTS in New York City and her B.S. from the University of Maryland in African American Studies and studied film production at Howard University. Upon graduating from Columbia, Avril worked in development for USA FILMS (known for such films as “Traffic”, “Being John Malkovich”, and “Deliver Us From Eva”). While in New York City she was also the Executive Assistant at the ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT VIDEO AND FILMMAKERS and served as one of the coordinators and judges in the Taste of Art Film Festival in Tribeca, NY.
Now living in Atlanta, Avril has been a Writer/Editor for WORLD CHANGERS MINISTRIES in College Park, GA, where she wrote books, magazine articles, advertising and web content for internationally reknown speaker, Dr. Creflo A. Dollar. Her articles have been published in such publications as CHANGING YOUR WORLD MAGAZINE , THE RESERVOIR, and on the Creflo Dollar Ministries/World Changers Church websites. Her writings have also been featured in publications such as THE INDEPENDENT FILM & VIDEO MONTHLY, TESTIFY SISTER, and online at NEXTWAVE.ORG.
As an advocate of training and film education, Avril continues to share her passion for the arts now as an Associate Professor in the Radio, TV & Film Department at Howard University in Washington, DC. Seeing a need for a broader selection of quality films, the goal of azUspeak Productions is to diversify the film market by educating and empowering aspiring filmmakers; thereby creating a movement consisting of media that represents the true, multi-dimensional qualities of people and speaks to the world.
ANGELA HARVEY, Producer
Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Angela first wanted to become a filmmaker when she graduated high school. However, she was persuaded by the pocketbook (and by the parental units) to study something that led directly to a steady paycheck. She earned a BA in Organizational and Interpersonal Communications at ORAL ROBERTS UNIVERSITY and spent ten years working in business and non-profit marketing.
For seven years, Angela worked as the Communications Manager of the 5,000 member ST. LOUIS FAMILY CHURCH, where she wrote and designed articles, websites, brochures, bulletins, flyers and packaging. She simultaneously worked with the disaster relief organization SERVICE INTERNATIONAL, where she handled donor communications and media relations.
As a freelance writer and graphic designer, Angela has designed projects for COCA-COLA and GILBERT CREATIVE; and she’s published articles in various media, including WOMEN IN FILM’S REEL FOCUS NEWSLETTER and the website CHRISTIANITY TODAY MOVIES.
It wasn’t until she made a major life choice—changing cities—that she came full circle back to filmmaking. By then, she’d landed in Atlanta where she found many other aspiring filmmakers. In that community, Angela made her first short film in 2007 as part of THE WOMANS ANGLE FILM PROJECT in Atlanta. Based in part on the success of that film, SLEEP KEEP WAKE TAKE, Angela was the first recipient of a full scholarship to the prestigious VANCOUVER FILM SCHOOL, awarded by MOVIEMAKER MAGAZINE. Focused on producing at VFS, Angela has produced an award-winning documentary and several short films. Angela has also written and directed two shorts and written a feature screenplay.
Angela is based in Atlanta, Georgia where she develops and writes projects for the Nationsfilm roster. She also accepts writing assignments from other companies looking to improve their scripts. Angela works in indie and big-budget film production whenever possible, including the LIONSGATE action/comedy, Killers, starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl and the TIN ROOF FILMS indie teen film, The Fat Boy Chronicles.

Hey Savvy!
Thanks so much for the advice and leads! I’m actually familiar with Act One. My producer for my last project used to attend their seminars quite often. I had heard at one point that they were shutting down but I guess that’s not true. I’ll have to look into them again.
